Pythagorean numerology: the system, openly

One to nine, repeating through the alphabet. The letter table everyone uses, the rules that matter, and the one letter the internet cannot decide what to do with. This is the system I practice, with nothing hidden.

The table

Pythagorean numerology assigns each letter of the alphabet a value from 1 to 9, then repeats:

A, J, S are 1. B, K, T are 2. C, L, U are 3. D, M, V are 4. E, N, W are 5. F, O, X are 6. G, P, Y are 7. H, Q, Z are 8. I, R are 9.

Every number in your chart is built from this table and your birth date, added and reduced: the digits of a total are summed until a single digit remains, with 11, 22 and 33 preserved as master numbers and never reduced further.

The core numbers it builds

The Life Path comes from the birth date, reduced two ways: day, month and year each reduced separately and summed, and the whole date summed raw, and when the two methods disagree, the master riding on the base is shown as it is, 33/6 for instance. The Expression is the whole name, every letter. The Soul Urge is the vowels. The Personality is the consonants. The Birthday number is the raw day. Around the core sit the Attitude, the Maturity, the Pinnacles and Challenges, the karmic markers: the debts and the missing values.

The Y, settled honestly

Here is where most of the internet gets vague, so here is the rule I use, stated openly: Y is always a consonant, value 7. The vowels are exactly A, E, I, O, U. When Y shows up in your name, Sarah, Yvonne, Kylie, it counts as a consonant, always, for the Soul Urge and the Personality split. No exceptions, no mood-based judgment calls.

Some practitioners treat Y as sometimes-vowel, following English pronunciation. That is a real tradition, and I disagree with it, and the disagreement matters: same name, different Soul Urge. This is why the letter table and the Y rule are stated on every page of this site rather than chosen quietly behind a calculator. A system that changes its rules between clients is not a system.

Why this system carries the name

Pythagoras taught that number underlies reality: harmony, proportion, order. The Pythagorean table inherits the name because it inherits the idea: if reality is structured, the structure can be counted, and if it can be counted, the counting can be checked. That last part is the whole discipline. Arithmetic is not mystical. Arithmetic is arithmetic, and honest numerology shows the working.

It is also why the system is honest about its own variants. The Chaldean table assigns different values, by vibration rather than position. Some schools run the Life Path one way only, some reduce 11 and 22 to 2 and 4. The tables are chosen, other tables exist, and a practitioner who hides which table they use is selling you weather reports from a private sky.

What the numbers are, and are not

The numbers describe design: what you are built for, how you meet the world, what you privately long for, when your timing says push and when it says rest. They do not predict events, and no honest practitioner will tell you Tuesday from them. They are a map of you, and a map is only accurate about the terrain, never about the traffic.
